Alice had lost count of how many times she’d asked the boy to just stay with her, but he never did. She had shown him what her work entailed and how she could always use an extra set of hands so he wouldn’t think she was pitying him. Despite the fact that he believed she was his mother, she enjoyed his company, and she wanted to give him at least a bit of affection, which was one in a list of things he needed sorely but would not ask for. She only hoped that he knew he could always come to her.

The young doctor’s apprentice was about to get started on dinner when the door was knocked on. The sight of him holding the valentine’s gifts alone was heartbreaking, but it was his smile that had tears prickling the corners of her eyes. Smiling in return, Alice crouched down and pulled him into a hug. “Thank you, sweetie.” She said gently, pressing a kiss to his forehead and not correcting him this time.

Pulling away, she took the gifts from his small hands and reached out to run her fingers through his hair. “They’re lovely. I was actually a little sad that I was having dinner alone tonight… Would you join me?” She asked with a smile, determined to have him deciding to stay for good one day.

The way her warm, graceful fingers caressed his hair was heartwarming and beyond wanted, however he didn’t show his eagerness in any way. He was slowly starting to realize that he was craving for affection, but he really didn’t want to admit it, not even to himself. He was just ten years old, but he was far too proud to recognize that he needed someone else. The warmth of a motherly figure, the protection of a father, and the fraternal love of a brother. All of those, things that he lost, things that had been ripped away from him at an age in which he was too young to understand, things that left him feeling lonely and angry and confused, that made him take reckless and terrible decisions in hopes to have again the only life that seemed worth living, that comfortable one in which people were his servants and they weren’t beating him up and treating him like trash.

So he indulged himself, he indulged into her divine touch, leaning towards her slightly and enjoying the moment, for he knew it wouldn’t last. By his own personal experience the good things, the things he enjoyed, the things he felt comfortable with and developed feeling towards wouldn’t last long, and that was the reason why he didn’t want to stay for too long around her. Doffy felt as if everything he touched would disappear from his life eventually, and he wasn’t ready to say goodbye to her. He couldn’t really handle more goodbyes at the moment.

For a few seconds he hesitated, but he truly didn’t want to leave. He never wanted to leave. He wanted to tell her that he couldn’t stay but he wasn’t going to be able to explain why. He wanted to ask her if she was going to be there everytime he came or if she would disappear too, but he didn’t for he was afraid of the answer. He wanted to tell her he didn’t want to bother her, but another thing came out instead.

“A lady should never have dinner alone.” he muttered in a low and serious tone.
